No other event heralds the start of the spring season like the emergence of brilliant spring flowers. Perennials, bulbs and foliage suddenly burst into bloom in a beautiful variety of colors that make the world seem new and fresh again and can turn your garden into a lush getaway from the trials and tribulations of the world.
When starting the Spring season, faced with nothing but a patch of open area or a wide swath of brown dirt, it can be difficult to envision the full beauty of a the spring flower garden that will soon appear. Take comfort in the fact that the work you do now will soon give witness to a wonderful transformation when your new plantings begin to take root, germinate, sprout, and grow. Before you know it that once pitiful piece of unadorned land will be absolutely glowing with fresh colors as flowers of all shapes and sizes begin to appear as if out of nowhere. If you plan you spring flower garden well you will be rewarded for weeks and months to come.

Step 1 – Preparing your Spring garden site.

The first step is to take stock of the area to be planted. The quality and condition of the soil, access to sunlight and moisture, drainage conditions, temperature and surrounding plantings are all factors that can contribute to selecting flowers most likely to thrive in a spring garden setting.

Step 2 – Picking your Spring Flowers.

Perennial flowers are generally considered to be the easiest to care for and will return year after year with proper care. Annual flowers will bloom once per year and die when temperatures drop. Biennial flowers will produce foliage the first year and blossoms the second year before dying and needing to be replaced. Keep these facts in mind when deciding what flowers to plant.

Step 3 – Deciding what goes where.

It can be helpful at this point to note where the sunny, shady, moist, and drier areas of your garden are, matching these up with a particular flower’s requirements. Keep in mind that a good mixture of height, color and variety makes for the most interesting and eye-catching garden.

Step 4 – Preparation of the soil.

Any soil that needs pre-preparation, such as adding fertilizer or organic matter, should be prepared in advance. Breaking up the soil to remove rocks, air pockets and dense soil clumps is a good idea, and it can be helpful to rake through the soil in areas to be planted to make the soil looser and welcoming to new root systems.

Step 5 – Planting.

When planting pay close attention to the requirements of your selected flowers. Spacing, depth of planting, and whether or not organic matter should be allowed to touch new stems or trunks is very important. Remember when planting that flower bulbs normally follow a different planting schedule than seeds or cuttings and be careful not to plant over existing bulbs from previous years.
Maintenance of your Spring Flower Garden.

Regular maintenance of your spring garden is needed in order for it to thrive and survive. Checking the soil for moisture to avoid over or under watering is important as spring flowers should never sit in soggy soil that can rot and possibly kill the root systems. Check frequently for pests or fungal diseases, and treat them accordingly with pesticide soaps or sprays. Fencing may be needed to control rabbits and other animals that can damage your flowers. Remove all affected plants and treat the surrounding soil if pests or diseases are discovered to avoid spreading to the rest of the garden. Continue to fertilize and prune until your new spring flowers have enjoyed at least one bloom cycle.
Lastly, enjoy the beautiful fruits of your labor.

Spring Planting-

If you are looking to plant trees or shrubs that flower quickly and provide a long season of blooms, then annuals are the ideal solution for your gardening wants or needs. Annuals are considered the most adaptable plants by the experts, requiring basic care and not so optimum conditions such as the weather and soil fertility. Some of the best annual trees for planting during early spring every year are discussed within this article.

Empress Trees
A common favorite annual due to its expanded and high shade, also an ideal annual for early spring planting. The empress tree grows about 20 meters tall, gives a rich lavender scent and provides an aesthetic value for your garden or patio due its colorful purple leaves. Requires full light from the sun and regular watering. Sheltering from cold and heavy dry winds is imperative. The most common areas of growth in the United States include the South, California’s Coast and the Southern Midwest.

Lombardy Poplar
The Lombardy poplar grows very fast and has a thin, tall, green structure. Most poplars are planted during early to mid-spring and bloom very rapidly if proper conditions are met. Commonly planted in rows, they must be separated with a distance of at least 2.5 meters apart. Just like empress trees, poplars also give an appealing value to any garden or patio. They are an ideal annual to plant in the Northwest and Northeast regions.

River Birch
The river birch is characterized for its curly and blackish bark and an approximate height from 10 to 15 meters. Its unique foliage offers a rhombic to oval green and turns yellow and falls during autumn. Some of the care that is considered involves the placement of moist and acidic soil, constantly wet conditions but they are resistant to long periods of dryness and flooding.

Willow
The willow is characterized for its beauty and fuzziness. This annual is always planted during the spring, grows moderately quickly and can create forests due its high rate of reproduction once the annual dominates a region. However, it is potentially considered as an invasive species in many parts of the world and planters should take precautions to not invade a natural, native area already home to many other different species. Willows can grow up to 30 meters high and 15 meters wide; its flowers are small fuzzy catkins and are light green in color. They require full sunlight, sufficient moisture and watering, and should not be planted nearby water in order to control potential explosive growth. The willow commonly grows in the southern areas of the United States as well as the southwestern coasts.

Japanese Zelkova
The Japanese zelkova is often mistaken with regular elms due to their strong similarity. Usually grows up to 20 meters tall, its foliage highly resembles those of elms with yellow-orange leaves to deep red in the fall. Ideal to plant during the spring in order to be pruned during the fall when it is considered to be dormant. Requires a great deal of sunlight to grow and resemble its natural beauty, basic moisture or watering and most species are resistant to Dutch elm disease. Commonly found in the southern states,

These five are the most common annual trees planted during the spring that grow moderately fast. The basic care that you should take is to plant them during the early spring, give them about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight every day, give about an inch of water every week and keep fertilizers and other uncommon factors for annuals out of the basic care processes until they are well established.

Annuals are plants and trees to plant if you are looking to aesthetically decorate your garden, backyard, patio or any other place that needs a little touch of detail. Their beauty, essence and growth immensely provide great results for many reasons beyond the scope of planting trees or plants. They are a unique species that will give you the most out of your hard work and money by providing the most beautiful plants and trees that grow in great conditions with proper care with basic needs without that many demands. Some of them even grow in conditions that are not ideal to their growth; this fact just proves how versatile and adaptable annuals can truly be.

For many plants that you plan on relocating outdoors in the spring, the time for planting those seeds is soon. Plants that have longer growing seasons than local weather will allow, need to be started indoors well before warm weather appears. Starting plants indoors isn’t as difficult as you might imagine. Of course, preparation and proper planning are crucial.

Every good growing season starts with good seeds and potting soil

Every farmer knows a good harvest begins with good seeds. If you live in farm country you’ll see signs along the road where farmers advertise the brand of seeds they’ve planted. Seed manufacturers provide those signs as advertising hoping to induce neighboring farms to see a bountiful harvest and purchase the same seeds next season. Now you’re probably not planning on planting an acre of seeds but the idea is the same. A good harvest begins with good seeds. Talk with your local nurseries, farm supply stores and garden shops to find good recommendations if you don’t have much experience with seeds. Avoid discounted seeds found at dollar stores or cheap outlet stores.

The same applies to potting soil. Potting soil isn’t dirt. It’s especially made for starting and maintaining plants indoors. It’s mostly peat moss, vermiculite and other materials designed to be water retentive yet well-draining if over watered. It’s mostly sterile, without insects or disease, and loaded with nutrients. Again talk to your local garden stores for good potting soil recommendations.

When to plant your seeds

Figuring out the correct date to plant your seeds so your plants are ready to move outdoors when the weather warms is quite simple. First you’ll need to know the expected date of the last frost in your area. In my area it’s typically the last week of April or first week of May. Depending on where you live this date could be much different. Now view the pack of seeds and find the number of weeks or days growth is required before moving your plants outdoors. Count backwards from your expected last frost date and that is when you should be starting those plants indoors. Plants all vary in growing seasons and how many days growth is needed before moving outdoors so mark your calendar when to start each variety of plant you are starting.

Where to place your indoor plants for proper lighting

This is the most challenging element to starting plants indoors. Plants need the correct amount of sunlight daily. Too much and they’ll dry up and burn and too little and they’ll wilt and die. In the Northern Hemisphere most will move their plants to windows facing south. During winter months typically there are many days of clouds so you’ll need to plan on purchasing a full spectrum light to supplement natural sunlight. On cloudy days expect to operate your full spectrum light between 12 and 15 hours per day. While sunlight is the best light for starting plants indoors; a full spectrum light can fill in the gaps when the sun doesn’t shine.

Beware of pest and pets

Keep a close eye on your young plants and act quickly at the first sign of insects or disease. If you have pets in the house you also need to make arraignments or setup small fencing to keep them away from your plants. Starting plants indoors shouldn’t be a daunting task but rather a fun time celebrating the impending spring. Starting plants indoors means springtime accompanied with warm weather isn’t far away.

Surveys show that, though 60% of the individuals within the survey who had a home renovation worked up a budget for it, 27% spent more than they’d originally budgeted.
It’s not straightforward to stay within budget when you’re doing a renovation. Boost that pressure all of the home improvement shows on T.V. or all of the decorating magazines that make the homeowner need the most recent and fanciest in appliances and decoration. Most individuals who renovate their homes wish to stay inside budget, but all of these influences will frequently tempt them to increase themselves a bit to have the features they see on T.V.
Even while not this, it’s tough to predict additional prices and make sure there is enough cash to hide any project overruns.

From garage remodeling to bedroom decoration, these shows portray the endless possibilities of designing your home. It all started in the nineties with the popularity of shows such as Changing Rooms since then the shows have become bigger and better and more elaborate. Simple Home Improvement Tips To Create A Better Home

If you do not show the required importance to your home improvement, you might get unsatisfactory results. Read about some helpful home improvement tips in this article. Home Improvement Starts in the Kitchen

If you’ve been watching Top Chef, No Reservations, or any of the other major cooking shows, your tongue is probably sweating all day long. These professionals cook on some pretty serious equipment in kitchens that most people can only dream of. At least, until now. If you have some spare cash, you can turn your cooking area into a rocking center of cuisine. Money specialists recommend that you have got the financing for the project lined up ahead of time in the form of a personal loan or a home equity loan. This can offer the home-owner the required cushion for added costs. Even if you don’t use the line of credit, it’s good to have it to cover contingencies. What if you are having a space added, and then you find out there’s a drawback with the electrical system that has got to be repaired?
The surveys show that 68% of the respondents used savings to pay for their home renovations, but they still will require coming up with to stave off monetary problems. Of the householders surveyed, 34% were borrowing to hide the cost of the house improvement.
Do not get caught up within the entice of trying to imitate the attractive mansions you see on these home and garden T.V shows.
Do not let the beginning of a home improvement become the top of your marriage. In this survey of the do-it-yourself home improvements are saying that 80% of the families doing the projects are having arguments over them.
2 thirds of the families have serious disagreements over the color theme of the project! The aim of the analysis was to find out consumer perspective toward do-it-yourself.
Having a professional could help a family avoid the deputes that occur many situations and could save money in the long term, since so many families have to pay extra to fix their mistakes.
Here are the high ten reasons for the disputes:
10. The Mars/Venus trap. Men are from Mars and ladies are from Venus and they cannot agree.
9. Lack of data to try and do the job.
8. The high costs.
7. Stress.
6. The disruption within the household the renovations cause.
5. Finding time to finish the project.
4. Unfinished jobs.
3. Misconceptions about the job. The T.V. show makes it look thus easy.
2. The one doing the work extremely does not want to try to to it.
And the high reason (hardly appears worthwhile):
Disagreements over the colour scheme.
Several individuals are reluctant to determine concerning moving as a result of of uncertainty in the housing market, therefore they’re following the lead of T.V. shows and renovating instead of moving.

The easiest type of garden bed to start with is a raised bed. It can be made of many different things. My personal favorite are railroad beams. They are a nice height, very workable, and look nice too, but you can make your raised bed out of other things as well as long as they can hold the dirt.
After you’ve chosen your desired building material, you must decide how large your bed will be. Things to keep in mind include how much time will you have to take care of it, are you going to can it or share with friends, and how many varieties you want in your garden. If you are low on gardening time or new to vegetable gardening, start with a small bed.
After you’ve decided the size of your vegetable garden, you have to decide where to place it.

Most people leave their gardens bare or wasted since they claim to not have time to indulge in outdoor activities. However, growing vegetables or fruits in your garden is actually a very rewarding process and with handy tips, gardening can be a breeze.Plants need up to eight or nine hours of sunlight everyday, so a Northern or Southern exposure is best. Another key element in plant growth is water. Since it doesn’t rain everyday, you will have to find a way to get your vegetable garden water. Unless you love carrying buckets of water around, it is best to build your garden within reach of a water hose.
Once you have your materials, size, and location down, all that’s left is soil and plants. Soil is extremely important. You must make sure that the soil you use to fill your raised bed is good top soil. Getting plant food and mixing it in will go a long way towards having a productive garden too. As far as plants go, do a plot plan before you plant. Decide what plants will go where based on the directions on the back of the packaging. Doing a plot plan with this information will make sure that you maximize your vegetable garden’s potential and minimize headaches during the process.

One of the biggest home expenses over time is the cost of energy. Going down under is one way to combat this cost. No, I am not talking about Australia!

Going Down Under With Your House

One of the best ways to save money on utilities it to build a house that takes advantage of the surrounding terrain. One option for really brining this to fruition is to go nearly or completely below grade. Better known as an underground structure, this approach drastically cuts the cost of utilities over the life of the property and gives you an opportunity to build something very creative.

When you go down under with a house, you can have depths from 10 inches to nearly the full height of the house. We are not talking about a house under a lawn. One of the more popular designs for these structures is the atrium layout.

The atrium house is essentially a four sided structure facing an open atrium in the middle. The outer walls of the house are positioned flush to the ground or built up berms. The major living areas all face into the atrium. Windows and glass doors are used to facilitate heating with passive solar energy. Access to the ground and garages are provided through stairways. By taking this approach, the house has the benefit of being protected from wind, is temperature regulated by the ground in an indirect geothermal gain strategy and has a nice open atrium that can be used for just about anything.

The interesting thing about this approach is the appearance above ground. The top of the house is flush or nearly flush with the ground. This provides protection from wind and an escape from noise pollution. The design also provides you with a lot of area to get creative with landscaping. Most people will put in exotic landscaping to take advantage of the situation. Japanese gardens, small forests and so on have been used to striking effect.

One area where you need to be careful with an underground house is drainage. Pumps should be sufficient to remove just about everything, but you need to plan for it at the outset. You don’t want to be sitting in a very expensive pool after that first rain.

Winter is here and if you have ever considered starting an indoor vegetable garden, why not start one inside your home? With the impending financial crisis close upon us, growing fresh healthy food not only makes lots of sense from the eating of healthy food to the saving of your money while doing so.
While a south facing window is the most desirable location, but if this is not available good artificial lighting will suffice. Plants grown out doors need 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily, but if you have to rely upon artificial light for indoor gardening, 10 hours daily is more desirable. There are a wide variety of artificial light sources now available to today’s home indoor gardener and due to the growing popularity of indoor gardening the list of products is increasing daily.
Incandescent lighting is not particularly desirable due to its low energy efficiency and the heat that is generated.

When the weather gets colder and the time for outdoor gardening is over, home gardeners can still turn to the pleasures of indoor vegetable gardens. Leafy crops, root crops, tomatoes, and many other kinds of vegetables are good for growing indoors. Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors

Have you ever wished you could produce home grown vegetables, fruits and flowers year round? Well you can, by using hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors techniques. Attain Indoor Health: Find The Best Home Vegetable Gardening Tip Today

Home vegetable gardening unlike other procedures of vegetable gardening requires lesser area of concentration making the said task more inviting and more attractive to most homeowners in the city today. Besides that, such kind of home gardening does not require too much effort than that of the actual farming process that the actual soil tenders are making.Incandescent bulbs can actually burn your plants if placed too close and the bulb life is relatively short.
Florescent lighting gives good light and is cooler; the bulbs usually have a life span of 20.000 hours and also come in a variety of versions and color spectrums. But like incandescent lighting, the results are not optimal.
For the best results you can use grow lights, such as High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps which unfortunately, generate a lot of heat and are rather pricey. HID are commonly used by commercial growers and include high pressure sodium lamps (HPD/SON) and metal halide (MH) both of which utilize their particular light spectrums which mimic the sun.
LEDs, the latest development in grow lights are fairly cheap, provide the optimum light spectrum for your plants, do not require ballasts and operate with less heat which will lengthen the intervals between watering.
Currently these are probably the best choice available.
LED lights are available in bulbs that have been designed to have specific wave lengths used for the photosynthesis process. These lights use less power as other types of bulbs for the same light intensity, they need no ballasts and emit much less heat than HID lamps, which translates into less watering of your plants. Although a little more expensive than fluorescent bulb it is claimed that they will last for years.
